Posted by Captain Tim Burke on May 01, 2005 at 21:03:04: Ship’s log. Saturday, April 30, 2005 This is the first log written while under way from Catalina. Two things happened today that I would like to share with you. While taking role call today, several divers were mad because, in their opinion, they were inconvenienced. I do not know of a single boat that is still taking role calls as they used to after drifting Dan. Everyone is making some effort to make sure this does not happen again. Today while the DM was taking role call, two divers did not answer. So there friends, buddy, ECT. Said he/she was down below, they thought. The DM said he had to see the diver. So off is a huff goes the person to get the diver. They both said a very sarcastic here, but in fact they were. I wonder what that person would have done if he/she had not been accounted for and left? I think it is much more important to be a little inconvenienced then left? So the next time the DM yells your name and needs to see you, give them a little latitude, they are only trying to protect you. This is the second weekend in a row that we have seen “Fin Back” whales on our way home from Catalina. They are huge, black and very slick. They have no growth on them as do most of the other whales and they are very big, so they make a very nice sight for the trip home. This is the first time since the first of the year that we have made it out for both days, 3 weeks in a row. Hope fully the bad weather is finally behind us. The first dive at Cat today was at the Isthmus and we had a minor current running from West to East. Vis was about 30 feet so off to “Emerald Bay” for the next two dives. They were both nice and vis was also about 30 feet. The water temp was in the mid 60’s, so it was very comfortable. I am now 7miles from “Angles’ Gate” and I have a huge container ship coming from my starboard side and a “Love Boat” coming out of the gate. The seas are calm with a 2-4’ wind chop coming out of the West. Until next time….. Captain Tim Burke |
