Ship's log Monday, January 28, 2002

Saturday, January 26th, 2002 with the "Grand Pooba" of "Reef Seekers" on board we headed for SBI. We departed at the normal time of 02:00. As we arrived at the East side of Sutil Island we had the rare opportunity to see an "Albatross". The only other ones that I have seen were at Cortez Banks a couple of years ago. There was a nasty little swell that made it just a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable. I dropped the hook in 25' of water, and backed up over the wall and sat in 100'. Everyone had a great dive, with several divers spotting "Mola Molas" (Sun Fish). Mike grabbed 3 very nice bugs here, and others saw bugs but were not as fast as Mike. The second dive we moved to South East Kelp, just there's no kelp right now. Nice bottom structure, but no game. Third dive we went to Arch Point where the divers had a nice current dive. The last dive was at the Rookery. Sea Lions everywhere, and the triumphant return of the "Elephant Seal". We saw about 4 monsters and I saw one that when he opened his mouth, the 2 tusks were unmistakable. A couple of divers went ashore to see the beast's, but I would not recommend that, as slow a cumbersome as that look they can move very fast for a short distance.
Sunday, January 27th, off the Catalina with Sport Chalet. We had several classed on board so we headed for Starlight. The first and second dives where here with no problems. The new divers enjoyed them selves, but the water was a little murky. The 3rd dive we went to the East side of Indian Rock, the water was clear the students really enjoyed this spot. Vis was about 40', and no currents.
