Ship’s log: Tuesday, May 18, 2010Two weeks ago I shared a trip to Catalina with Horizon Charters. We had 80 students, 40 on my boat and 40 on the Horizon. It was a fun trip and the kids got to go kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, and hiking on the island. Almost forgot, also to play with Kodi. He was the hit of the trip. Last week we went to Catalina and had a very nice 80’ plus vis at every spot. On Saturday we headed over to San Clemente. We had a nasty crossing from Catalina to Clem, but it was very calm at the island. The Navy shut down the best parts of the island so we dove at “Hole in the Wall” for the first dive and vis was only about 30’. Then down to “Wagon Tracks” were the vis was not much better, if any. Then back to the East side of “Hole in the Wall” as it had the best vis. Not a real impressive dive trip because of the Navy shutdown and our limited area to dive, but not that bad either. Many divers got their first dive at San Clemente and all enjoyed the trip. Chris Grossman took a picture of a “Transparent Gobbie”, never even heard of one before. Go to “Diver.net” and check out his pictures, they are always good. Again I have seen things in the ocean that I have never seen before. On the trip with the students one of the parents said he say a fish jump out of the water and we were trying to decide what kind of fish it was. As he described it to me I said I thought it was a Mola Mola, but I had never seen one jump out of the water before. On the way home we say Mola Molas schooling, again a first, and in fact they were jumping out or the water. All of the Mola Molas were around 1 foot big. So I guess they are babies. This weekend again we say Mola Molas schooling and jumping. News flash……….. Kodi told me the other night after watching “The Clone Wars” that he did not like being named after a bear. His full name is Kodiac Bear. He told me in no uncertain terms that from now on he is a “Jedi Knight” of the 8th order. Hence forth his name is “Kodi Wan Kenobi” Until next time…………………..
